Twisted Tail for a Delightful Dinner Date

Can you say “I discovered a new restaurant” when you’ve known it was there for a few years, just hadn’t made it there yet? Well whatever you’d like to call it, had a great night out at Twisted Tail in the Society Hill region of Philadelphia. Sitting just north of South St. on 2nd St. in an area also known as the Head House Square.

Discovered with the last-minute idea to find a dinner reservation (really should start to plan ahead…but when the last minute finds are so delicious and worth the spontaneous “popup” feeling, why change the “bad” habit??)

Some nights are for wine, some nights are for brews and some nights, like this night, it’s the delicious cocktails we dive into. Right off the bat, our server shared his great knowledge with a couple great suggestions. Kool Kat and the Cargo Plane were the first cocktails – personally I enjoy the refreshing flavor of cucumber in a drink and even so the cucumber was not overstated. In total we tried 3 different sips: Kool Kat, Cargo Plane and the Boog – love the local aspects that the Boog offered!

·       Kool Kat: Grey Goose Pear, Lime, Cucumber

·       Cargo Plane: Bourbon, Orange, Cardamom, Amaro, Aperol

·       The Boog: TTT Buffalo Trace, NJ Blueberry, NJ Honey, Lemon, Rosemary

On Friday and Saturday evenings, you are joined my live music – tonight a vocalist and a keyboardist accompanied dinner, which was very enjoyable. (I almost wanted to type “quite enjoyable” but sounded too poised and proper – tonight was relaxed and fun). As we appreciated the great company of music and sipped our first cocktail, Nick, our server, brought us a little popcorn to munch on while we waited for our food. There is one way to win me over and that is to know when I NEED food and well that was just the right way to calm the hungry beast!

THE FOOD…

Appetizer we picked a healthy option – the beets. This was probably one of the first times trying beets when it wasn’t paired with goat cheese. The yogurt sauce made a great contrast to the pickling flavor of the beets and did you know there are more than just red beets? (red or purple?). YES! The beets were yellow, pink and red – your fun fact of the day. (You’re welcome)

Dinner – steak and seafood are great staples to enjoy out and it’s always exciting to see how different restaurants give a little twist. I was very impressed by the steak – might have even been the first time I had the Hanger Steak cut. A little crispy but the chimichurri and a little potato, made for a dish I’d be back for. The Salmon was also a great choice! Do these photos make you hungry?

·       Heirloom Beets: Yogurt, Candied Ginger, Mizuna

·       Roasted Salmon: Tomato, Fennel, Herb Vinaigrette

·       Grilled Hanger Steak: Fingerling Potatoes, Shishito, Chimichurri

Thank you Twisted Tail for a delicious meal, impeccable service and an atmosphere perfect for date night or hanging out with a couple friends. We’ll be back!
